Johannes King — Das Gourmetkochbuch — oder
Die sinnliche Lust am Leben

Rantum/Sylt, February 2007. Johannes King, two Michelin stars and 17 Gault Millau points, is one of the best chefs in Germany, and of all the top chefs, he is the youngest. Since May 2000, King has been the Head Chef and host at the Söl'ring Hof, a five-star hotel in the dunes of Rantum on Sylt, and since the beginning of the year, he is also the sole operator of the luxury country house, which is able to meet the needs of even the most discerning guests.

His journey to the stars began at an early age. Born in the Swabian town of Schramberg in 1962, he did not stay long at his parents' farm, although even today, he maintains that his childhood together with his nine brothers and sisters was the most inspirational time of his life. Aged just 15, the young Swabian got his first experience of cooking under the auspices of his strict but loving teacher, Irmgard Meier, at the Ringhotel Johanniterbad in Rottweil. Here, he learned his trade and, with his French colleague, discovered his enthusiasm for the long journey ahead, which took him to Franz Keller in Cologne, to the famous Viennese confectioner's "Oberlaa", and then to the legendary Henri Levy at the "Maître" in Berlin. Other defining sojourns included the "Zum Hugenotten" restaurant at the Intercontinental in Berlin, then a summer season in the beautiful Burgundy region until, back in the capital city, he became the Most Improved Chef of the Year 1997/98 at the "Grand Slam" and received his first star.

Now, his first cookery book has been published, containing more than 100 of his best recipes and exquisitely presented by Collection Rolf Heyne. The aim of this book is to express the passion that Johannes Kings has for his work, his employees, his guests and, ultimately, the island of Sylt. The book is a homage to the ensemble from which he takes his strength, in whose diverse vitality he finds new ideas and creativity, and which gives him the lust for life. The result is a book which is more than just a technical manual for people to try recipes out for themselves. It is a book which aims to provide inspiration and encouragement for a life full of pleasurable passion and passionate pleasure. Johannes King: "When the proverbial spark of enthusiasm ignites, then this book has fulfilled its purpose and stimulated the passion which provides the lust for life and thereby guarantees a lust for life."
